New Footage of Final Fantasy IX Mobile Hits the Web

And now, for the only article actually worth reading this week, comes a video out of Square Enix's Japanese Youtube channel that explores the upcoming PC and mobile release of Final Fantasy IX. Announced only a few short weeks ago, Final Fantasy IX appears to be on the verge of an imminent global release. Square Enix's video, which has footage of the game sprinkled throughout, is packed with a ton of new details. But first, the goods:

Final Fantasy IX will play in 4:3 format, instead of being stretched to fill the screen. This is an interesting, but not unusual choice, in that it preserves the visual quality of the backgrounds which--for being upscaled to fit on HD displays--are remarkably crisp in the video. The controls have obviously been tweaked for touch screens, following in the same vein as Final Fantasy VII. Given the language difference it's difficult to say exactly where and what the differences are, but they should be minimal. Character models have also received a glorious visual upgrade, which will add another level of detail to the world of Final Fantasy IX.

TouchArcade provided some insight to the conversation occurring throughout the video:

Per our resident Japanese speaker, Mr. Shaun Musgrave, relevant nuggets of wisdom dropped in the above video include that the port of the game is totally complete and basically ready to sell on the App Store. The rest of the video includes a lot of commentary on how the various systems in the game works, how much faster it loads, as well as how much prettier it is now compared to the original PlayStation FF IX release. Along with the interface (obviously) being totally redone for touch, it also features iCloud support for save game syncing.

Guys, I'm not gonna lie. I'll probably go dark from the minute this game hits to the minute Final Fantasy XV (supposedly) releases this year. But I had a good run and, just short of an all-out HD remake (which, let's face it, will almost certainly happened after VII and VIII get theirs) this is the best I'm going to get.

Final Fantasy IX for PC and smartphones launches "soon."

If only this game could get the remake treatment when they're done with VII...
