Square Enix announced today that they have made a deal with Epic Games and purchased a license for the Unreal Engine 3. For those of you who don't know Epic Games, they are the creators of the Unreal series (that the graphics engine got named after) and of the recent Gears of War for the Xbox 360. There are already numerous games using the new engine and Square Enix has said that they are going to use it to develop games for the next-gen systems.

Until now Square has been using many different graphics engines made in-house but the cost of developing them has been very high and its been increasing, especially with the extremely powerful CELL architecture used by the PlayStation 3. The White Engine created for FF XIII and Versus XIII will still be used for other titles.

Taku Murata the general manager of the research and development division at Square Enix explains :

"The complexity of the next-gen games that offer HD graphics and uses multi-core parallel processing poses a number of technological challenges to our developers. However by using efficient technology we can accelerate the development, thus saving time and resources that we can use to further develop the game design".

Its currently unknown what title(s) Square Enix is going to develop with the Unreal Engine but we'll keep you updated. Maybe we'll see a Final Fantasy FPS.
