Eurogamer has posted a fascinating interview with Tomb Raider's executive producer Scot Amos, discussing the game's long-awaited ascent to profitability. Despite developer Crystal Dynamic's critically acclaimed reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise, the game's release did not achieve the meteoric sales figures (3.5 million in month against expectations of 5 million) that Square Enix hoped would propel the franchise, and the publisher itself, back into the black.
"By the end of last year - Tomb Raider is in the black," Amos revealed. "We've crossed the line of profitability for the last-gen and PC versions."
2013 was a roller coaster year for Square Enix. After a management shakeup designed to counter growing financial problems facing the company, Square Enix apparently returned to form with the reveal of Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III at E3 in addition the release of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. Later this month Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix will publish Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition for PS4 and Xbox One, featuring new physics, character models, and improved environment effects.
"This was in the bag and on the way even before anything happened with sales expectations or where things were at. We were having this conversation at the end of 2012 when we first heard details and rumours of next-gen consoles."
Both companies have confirmed that a sequel to Tomb Raider is in the works, although relatively little else has been revealed. Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will launch worldwide in the last week of January.

The third episode of Life is Strange is coming out tomorrow and Square Enix has released a new trailer. In this episode Max and Chloe’s investigation into Rachel Amber’s disappearance lead them to break into Blackwell Academy after dark, to search for answers. Secrets will be uncovered and Max will find another use for her power.
Looking forward to the new game they're working on. The last one was great :)
Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition looks amazing too. Can't wait to see what else this partnership produces...
Really looking forward to the Definitive Edition. Lara Croft in Kingdom Hearts III? :p
Yes. Yes to this a thousand times. And Lara Croft as a summon in Final Fantasy XV. She puts an arrow into the main enemy's head from a nearby rooftop at the start of the game and BLAM, game over.
