Square has recently reached the 120,000 Final Fantasy XI/PlayOnline user mark, roughly 60% of the userbase Square requires to break financially even. However, it may not be possible to break the mark any time soon were PlayOnline only available to Japanese gamers. Registrations have increased slowly since the service was introduced in May, most likely due to a botched launch and rabid bugs that plague the system.
Despite Square's possible inability to garner ideal numbers in Japan alone, Games Are Fun is reporting (probably after considering EGM's recent hint of the same nature) that Square is rethinking their strategy to expand Final Fantasy XI to a worldwide audience due to the inability to allocate proper resources, thus putting a Final Fantasy XI release in both Europe and North America in jeopardy.
Ebgames.com have Final Fantasy XI for preordering so that might suggest that the game will be released in the US.
We'll keep you updated on this matter.
