According to the latest issue of the Japanese magazine Dengeki , Square Enix confirmed that they are going to release a playable demo of Final Fantasy XIII sometime this year. While they they don't want to give a definite date, the Square Enix development team stated that they "are hoping to have a playable demo ready for E3 in 2007."

Unfortunately due to the changes made to E3 last year, only developing studios, retailers, and the press will be allowed to attend. If the public wishes to play, they'll have to pray that Square Enix decides to show the demo off at a later time, such as at the Tokyo Game Show. One could also hope that the demo will be available for download on the PlayStation Network.
