Square Enix has officially cancelled its upcoming mobile title Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link, citing a broader strategic realignment focused on premium console and PC experiences. The game, which was first announced in 2022, had been in closed beta testing in select regions as recently as early 2024.

In a brief statement released Tuesday, Square Enix thanked fans for their support and acknowledged the development team’s efforts. “Although we worked hard on developing and adjusting the game in the hope that it would be enjoyed by lots of players, we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time, leading us to the decision to cancel development,” the company said.

Missing-Link was set to expand the lore of the Kingdom Hearts universe with a GPS-based system similar to Pokémon GO, blending real-world exploration with action-RPG mechanics. The cancellation comes after a years of less-than-stellar earnings and layoffs at international divisions across Square Enix.

Square Enix assured players that “We are hard at work on KINGDOM HEARTS IV, and hope you’ll continue to support the series as you keep an eye out for further updates.”
