A few more details about Final Fantasy has been released during the Tokyo Game Show. FF Tactics Advance employs a structure similar to its PlayStation predecessor, with the same sort of world map and tile-based battlefield.
The combat and character development system looks pretty good, on top of different character jobs, there's a selection of different character races as well, which should throw yet another factor into the endlessly entertaining mix of character building and customization. Five races appear in Square's trailer for the game:
Human: Presumably the baseline race, without significant advantages or disadvantages.
Viera: A dark-skinned people with unusual bat-wings growing from their ears, which seem to have a more agile, thief-like character.
Nu Mou: These look like holdovers from Legend of Mana, perhaps a race of traders or engineers.
Bangaa: Clad in fighting outfits with padded gloves, the Bangaa appear to be adept at the old Black Belt class.
Morgle: Presumably a play on "Moogle," albeit with a more mischievous character, and looking like they have knack for black wizardry.
It's not quite clear whether race and class will be completely independent, or whether some races will be limited to a slice of the total overall class selection, but there's still potential for considerable variation in gameplay, and the more exaggerated character designs are a good choice in a situation where sprite detail necessarily has to drop a little.
While we are talking about games for Nintendo systems; Square has confirmed fears of pessimistic Gamecube fans, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicle is not making any kind of showing at the fall Tokyo Game Show this year. Square representatives on the show floor today confirmed that the game is not present in playable or video form -- the only product from Square on the show floor for a Nintendo platform is Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.
