It's been a while, but there's a lot of exciting Square Enix news—especially for Final Fantasy XIV—that's worth recapping now that 2014 is drawing to a close. Final Fantasy XIV is getting its first expansion next Spring. Dubbed 'Heavensward,' the expansion was announced in October at the FFXIV Fan Fests held across the globe.

It is the first full-blown expansion to Final Fantasy XIV since the launch of version 2.0, A Realm Reborn, back in Spring 2013. Alongside many other additions, the expansion promises take players to the hotly-anticipated city-state of Ishgard. Joining the fray is the new Dark Knight job, flying mounts, and a host of new enemies and bosses. While the game's development team is busy putting the finishing touches on the expansion, they also recently put out Patch 2.4, 'Dreams of Ice,' which added new dungeons and difficulty modes, the Rogue and Ninja jobs, and new main scenario quests.

With Final Fantasy XIV solidly established across the PC, PS3, and PS4, Heavensward promises an exciting start to 2015 for its subscriber base of 2.5 million players.
